I personally believe, like most people, that a diverse gene-pool is a good thing in terms of intellect and cognitive ability. It’s just now that I have realized, through your post that indeed, the children have to grow up in a favorable environment for them to be ‘smart’. In 2018, 3.5% of marriages here in the Philippines occurred between either a Filipina and a foreign national or a Filipino and a foreign national. Despite this number of interracial marriages, we cannot be assured that the next generation of Filipino-Americans, Filipino-Chinese, etc. will be more intelligent. The environment might still play a more significant role than what the genes dictate.

I have thought that intermarried children are always smarter than mormal ones for a long time. Now, I will have to change my point of view towards this ubiquitous assumption. The cognitive ability of children is definitely not determined by their parents’ interracial marriage but depends on their parents’ education level and resources which may give their children home literacy from very early age. That is the real difference.

I myself have a cross-cultural relationship and we have always tried to help our children to benefit from the best sides of both cultures. It is, of course, easier said than done but I have realized that ‘culture’ in the case of an intermarried couple is so comprehensive: it not only includes ethnic cultures from the countries of their origin but family cultures embedded in the ethnic cultures. Migrant cultures unique to each recipient country should be considered as well. I was always worried about the resilience of my children in accommodating such a diverse range of cultures and your post assures me that we are doing the right things!
