We need to present it as something “cool” so kids can feel motivated towards learning and practicing a newly acquired language.

I think the key is: language is communication. Children will not speak a language that is not needed for communication. Therefore if there is not two adults speaking this language, they will very quickly and naturally discontinue it. I have found however that a language will be continued if it is a language associated with „cuddling and comfort“ even when it is not needed for communication. A language on the other hand may be discontinued if not associated with comfort, especially with distress or culture shock. I therefore suggest consciously generate comfy situations with each language and make sure that the child regularly experiences adults communicating in each language with each other. For us, it was food for Mandarin Chinese, reading story books/later novels every evening for German and watching movies for English. Also crucial is: every grownup sticks to their code towards the child. Do not keep changing languages, even in public… (I ended up speaking German to all kids wherever they were from. And gee, no one ever complained…)

I was very engaged with my son’s Spanish when he was little. When we had twin girls after him, it was harder to maintain the previous discipline. We were fortunate that our three kids went to a bilingual school, and my daughter’s Spanish improved considerably.

I’ve absolutely loved the vase metaphor. I’m raising my daughter bilingual and I can relate to the stories mentioned in this post.
