As a Chinese, I have never been to Tibet, I heard that it is a sacred place with a different culture from other places in China. This is the first time for me to hear that there are many local languages in Tibet, it could be very difficult in translating Mandarin into the local languages, particularly when people speaking one of these languages cannot understand other languages though they all belong to Tibet languages. As you mentioned in the post, people may feel weird when they are listening to a translation of their mother tongue, I believe that it is normal. When I tried to translate Chinese into English, it also sounds weird. That’s why perhaps I cannot be a translator or an interpreter, accurately translating a language into another one requires people’s high qualifications of two languages and the ability to recognise different contexts, since the meaning of a word in Mandarin may show differences in different situations so that translators have to make more efforts to do the job. Anyway, thank you for doing the translation job during the epidemic.

That’s because most translations into local languages are done direct from Mandarin. The Chinese State is extremely jealous about ensuring political conformity between the national narrative in Mandarin and the local narrative in “minority languages”. Whole dictionaries have been created for local languages in China. They are designed to ensure that language workers Mandarin terminology into the “correct” terminology in local languages. This results in extremely artificial language not only in minor local languages but also in major ethnic languages like Mandarin, which often read like artificial officialese.
