One of my friends has the similar experience with them. Although his job may not be a “3D” job, it is labor-intensive. Communication is limited by the energy and work type, and he tend to use his mother tongue in after work communication. The register used in work place language may also limit language learning at work. I have friends work as waiter or bar tender in restaurant and pubs but the language they used and learned is still limited. Sales man may be a job that involves mass communication, but how can a migrant with low language proficiency be a salesperson?

People are too busy doing their jobs, focusing on doing their tasks right that they don’t focus much on learning a new language even if it means being able to communicate better with co-workers and improve productivity. If a company is to hire migrant workers, they should set a day or at least a couple of hours teaching their workers a common language for better communication and information dissemination.

What about terminology that you would not necessarily hear on the job?
