I’ve seen something similar in Australia. All kinds of businesses take advantage of vulnerability of international students and working holiday makers who are desperate to get visa sponsorship. Their multilingual capital, which gets them to get into the job market in the first place, loses its value as there is no shortage of willing, multilingual candidates who can replace them. Poignant and complex stories like theirs and Naeem’s go unreported in the field of bilingualism and multilingualism (but for many of us doing fieldwork in a linguistically diverse ‘rich’ country, we’ve seen these kinds of cases too often), so the book is of great importance, adding context-rich insights into the lives of multilinguals and how everyday exploitation works at the intersection between transnational dreams and multilingual capital.
