Whenever someone posts a “[NAME] is canceled!” or the famous hashtag ‘#CANCEL[name],’ calling out a person for whatever wrong they did, people always eat it up. And I always thought that this cancel culture only emerged recently with the advent of social media, but we have really been ‘canceling’ people since the dawn of time (like our great-grandmothers!). More than that, this piece also reminds me of the woman scientist Bell Burnell who had discovered pulsars, but the Nobel Prize went to her male supervisor. It is disheartening to read about women being snubbed or canceled to favor the other gender. However, I do believe that today’s culture and society push women to fight back, and although we still have more to go, we have definitely come a long way.

I love that you pointed out the structural, historical as well as on-going cancellation of women, and reflected upon the way ‘cancel culture’ is in stark contrast to this. In Germany, too, ‘cancel culture’ is discussed a lot, especially by white cis men who feel they are not allowed to speak what’s on their mind anymore and feel cancelled even though they aren’t really cancelled for what they are being called out for.

Also thank you for including a biological perspective as cis men have largely influenced (and still do) how women’s, trans and non-binary person’s bodies are perceived and discussed to this day. E.g. myths around the hymen as a sign for virginity are still very dominant around the world and influence persons with vaginas strongly. It is yet another example of why we have a long way to go and of who our body parts are named after as “it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that the hymen is named after the Greek God of marriage, called … Hymen“.

Thanks, Rahel! Bryan Sykes’ “The Seven Daughters of Eve” is a very readable introduction to mitochondrial DNA, even if a bit dated for this fast-moving field. If you are up to something a bit more challenging, “Ancestors in our genome” is a most fascinating read.

I found it really interesting to learn that we are biolocially so close to our great-grandmothers. I know my grandmother’s maiden name, but will have to find out what her mother’s name was. 🙂

There is another term for it: recto-uterine pouch. However, pouch of Douglas is much more commonly used.
What’s more, the equivalent cavity in the male body has only one single name: recto-vesical pouch …

Nuh. If midwifery paid as much as gynecology or obstetrics, the gender balance would the other way round …

it does boggle the mind … the recent vintage of the set is a useful reminder that we should not take anything for granted (for anyone who doesn’t take that lesson from the daily news …)

The only possible explanation is that there simply weren’t any women who deserved to be in that top 6… (sarcasm). That’s the reason that’s usually given for these glaring disparities, right? We wouldn’t want to give up our very fair meritocracies…

Great read, indeed. I’ve also wondered if the term ‘midwife’ also causes the gender imbalance in the profession these days even though it refers to ‘being with the mother (wife)’ rather than the gender of the midwife..

He has chauvinistically and gremlin-like doctored your text in a couple of places, Ingrid jaan, methinks. Barbara Streisand has absorbed your second paragraph: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect

I really enjoyed reading this today, of all days…and laughed aloud when you said “do not bother”. Looking forward to the next instalment, on the cancelled women of Linguistics.
