I am bilingual and speak two languages: English and Polish. Both my parents are Polish and I did go to Polish school on the weekend when I was in highschool.
Interestingly, I agree with the following quote to some degress: “They found that English-speaking background mothers were the main contributors to the forum, and that their multilingual partners were often represented as failing in their duty to speak their language to the couple’s children.”.
As the eldest of the siblings, both my parents spoke Polish at home which lead to speaking fluently in both English (from school – weekdays) and Polish. However, over the years, mum returned to work after looking after my two brothers and they were old enough to go to English school (on the weekdays). With both my parents spending more time in English-speaking environments, lead to English being spoken more frequently at home. The frequency of English spoken is evident my two brothers and I. From me being the most fluent in Polish and my youngest brother being the least fluent in Polish. Sadly, we see the effects of speaking English more frequently at home and try to speak Polish more than English at home to maintain fluency of the ‘mother-tongue’ of our parents.
