In Year 7 Caroline Mahoney chose to study Japanese as the language seemed much more ‘exotic’ than the other foreign languages offered at her high school (French and German). Her first visit to Japan on a school excursion left a long-lasting impression on the mind of the young high school student, which later led her to complete a double degree in journalism and Japanese at
the University of Technology, Sydney. In her third year, Caroline spent a memorable year in
Hakodate, a small city on the northern island of
Hokkaido, and upon returning to Sydney, she worked as a secretary in the Economic Section of the Japanese Consulate. An opportunity to live and study in Japan again arose when she won a prestigious Japanese government scholarship and lived in Tokyo for two years between 2009 and 2011. At the time of interview, Caroline had only been back in Australia for a few months. However, she was about to be on the move again, this time to
Newcastle, 160kms north of Sydney, to take up a new position as Education Officer for the
NSW Community Languages Schools Program. In this video, she reflects on what her life would be like if she hadn’t chosen to study Japanese back in high school, and shares her thoughts on the two islands she calls home.
