Mayu Kanamori

Born and raised in Tokyo, Mayu Kanamori arrived in Australia in 1981. She worked as a researcher and photographer for major news media companies in her early days before becoming a freelance photo journalist and artist. Mayu took us to Rookwood Cemetery. Mayu wanted to show us the burial place of the first recorded Japanese settler in Australia, Sakuragawa Rikinosuke (arrived in 1860s). The interview location in a cemetery also fits the theme of one of her projects, In Repose, which features the burial sites of Japanese people across Australia. In this interview, Mayu shares her views on being a transnational artist and the final destination of transnationals.

東京で生まれ育ち、1981年に来豪。リサーチャーやフォトグラファーとしてオーストラリアのメディアで勤めた後、フリーランスのフォトジャーナリスト・アーティストとして活動を始める。インタビューのロケ地として金森さんが選んだ場所はシドニー郊外にあるロックウッド墓地。ここには日本人として初めての移住者と記録されているさくらがわりきのすけ氏（1860年代に来豪）が静かに埋葬されている場所だ。このロケ地の選択は金森さんの代表作の一つである「In Repose」（オーストラリア国内の日本人墓地巡礼の記録）のテーマに沿ったもの。ロックウッドに眠る先人たちを背景に、トランスナショナル・アーティストとしての視点そして国境を越え生活する人々が最後にたどり着く場所について語ってくれた。
