Name: Mayu Kondo
Birthplace: Gifu Prefecture, Japan
Arrival in Australia: Mid 1990s
Occupation: Hospital scientist
Location: Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, NSW, Australia
In this episode of
Japanese-on-the-Move, we meet Mayu Kondo, a native of
Gifu and a long-term resident of
Bondi, Australia. Like thousands of international students who arrive in Australia each year, she came to Sydney in her early 20s with the dream of perfecting her English and with the belief that it’s best to learn English in an English-speaking country. That was 15 years ago – today she is a certified hospital scientist at the
Prince of Wales Hospital in
Randwick. In this interview, Mayu tells us that having lived and worked in multicultural Sydney, she’s come to understand that there is no such thing as ‘common sense’. She says “you can’t read other people’s mind” and tries to clearly communicate with her colleagues in a culturally diverse workplace. While both Australia and Japan are home for Mayu, she recognises a much better career prospect and easier life-style in the former and she’s happy to be a ‘seasonal tourist’ in the latter.
