Mitsuo Shoji

Mitsuo Shoji is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists and his artworks are much-admired internationally. He arrived in Australia in the early 1970s against his parents’ concerns because of the infamous White Australia Policy, which was still in operation then. When he began teaching in Melbourne, most of his students were of Anglo-Saxon backgrounds and Asian students were almost non-existent. Mitsuo then went on to teach at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney for 29 years before retiring in 2007. Today he spends most of his time in his own studio in Ryde, Sydney, where Kimie met the artist and his partner, Christine.In this episode, Mitsuo recalls his early days in Melbourne and shares with us his passion for art – “I’d like to continue to create art no one has seen.”

今回のエピソードに登場される小路光男氏はオーストラリアを代表する陶芸家であり、世界の美術界から高い評価を受けている。１９９７年代に来豪された際、白豪主義の名残があったためご両親はあまり賛成ではなかったとの事。実際メルボルンでは、ほとんどの学生は白人であり、アジア人はほとんどいなかった。その後シドニー移りシドニー大学のSydney College of the Artsで２９年教鞭を取り、２００７年にリタイヤされた。現在はライドにあるご自宅兼スタジオで精力的に作品創作を続けられている。インタビュー時には奥様のクリスティーンさんもご一緒頂いた。このビデオでは来豪間もない頃の体験、そしてアートに対する情熱についてお話頂いたー「死ぬまで見たことないものを見たい。そして、見たことの無いものを創り続けて行きたい」。
