Mitsuo Shoji is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists and his artworks are much-admired internationally. He arrived in Australia in the early 1970s against his parents’ concerns because of the infamous
White Australia Policy, which was still in operation then. When he began teaching in Melbourne, most of his students were of Anglo-Saxon backgrounds and Asian students were almost non-existent. Mitsuo then went on to teach at the
Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney for 29 years before retiring in 2007. Today he spends most of his time in his own studio in Ryde, Sydney, where Kimie met the artist and his partner, Christine.In this episode, Mitsuo recalls his early days in Melbourne and shares with us his passion for art – “I’d like to continue to create art no one has seen.”
