    After graduating from university, Richard Southern had two reasons to leave Australia for Japan. First, he loved Japanese poetry and, second, he wanted to see the world beyond Perth. He first arrived in Japan on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, a Government-funded program which aims at promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations. Later he taught at three different schools in Hyogo Prefecture, where he learnt to appreciate a different way of life. Although he is back in Perth, he still calls Japan home and plans to return for work one day.

    大学を卒業後、日本に行くことを決意したリチャード・サザンさん。来日を決めた二つの理由は、日本の詩が好きだったという事とパースの外に飛び出したかったからだ。ジェットプログラム（日本政府が助成している国際理解を深めるためのプログラム）で来日したのは２００５年。その後兵庫県で夜間学校などを含めた３校で教鞭を取り、いろいろな事を学ぶ事が出来たという。現在はパースに戻り、クリエイティブコンサルタントとして活躍する中、日本はいまだに「ホーム」であり、いつか戻りたいとお話ししてくれた。
