Shigekazu Sato

In July 2010 Ambassador Sato arrived in Canberra as Japan’s new ambassador to Australia. Coming from Hong Kong, the Australian capital city seemed quiet and peaceful to him, and he began his work with a deep appreciation for the country, which had started accepting Japanese migrants as early as the 19th century. Today, Australia hosts the third-largest population of Japanese outside Japan. Ambassador Sato likens Australia-Japan relations to an old marriage – stable and trustworthy – and it is his mission to make that relationship an even more stable and prosperous one. In this video interview, Ambassador Sato addresses the issue of language learning for the Japanese, recognizing the burden resulting from English as the language of globalization in the 21st century.

佐藤重和氏は、駐オーストラリア日本国特命全権大使として２０１０年７月に来豪されました。前任地の香港に比べるとキャンベラは静かな土地という印象を持たれたそうです。１９世紀から日本人移民を受け入れはじめ、現在では在住日本人数が世界で３番目に多いオーストラリアへの深い敬意、そして日本人が持つ言語の問題などについてお話して頂きました。また、 日本とオーストラリア の関係を「成熟した夫婦」に例えられた佐藤大使は、今後もより豊かで安定した関係を構築していく事に尽力したいと、力づよく述べられました。
