Yuri Takahashi

In 1991, Yuri Takahashi was assigned to work as a Burmese language expert at the Japanese embassy in Myanmar (Burma). Three years later, she was transferred to the Japanese consulate in Sydney, Australia, where she was in charge of promoting Japanese culture and language to the Australian public. At present, Yuri has three commitments in her life – teaching Japanese at theUniversity of Sydney, completing her PhD thesis on the history of modern Burma, and promoting her husband’s music internationally. In this Japanese-on-the-Move episode, Yuri tells us about her intercultural marriage with her partner from New Zealand. It all started one night when she visited a jazz club in Sydney soon after she arrived in Australia in mid 1994. She recognised a pianist, Mike Nock, a jazz musician she used to read about in her junior high school years.

今回のJapanese on the Moveに登場するのはシドニー在住の高橋ゆりさん。初海外勤務先はミャンマーの日本大使館で、ミャンマー語のエキスパートとして３年間勤務された。その後、シドニー日本総領事館に転勤となり、日本文化と日本語のプロモーション担当。高橋さんは現在多忙であり、とても充実した人生を過ごされている　－　シドニー大学で教鞭に立ちつつ、博士号論文に勤しみ、ジャズ・ミュージシャンのご主人（マイク・ノック氏）の音楽活動を支えている。このインタビューではニュージーランド人のご主人との国際結婚についてのお話にクローズアップした。お二人が出会ったのは、高橋さんがシドニー転勤後まもなくジャズクラブに訪れたある晩。ピアノを弾いていたのは、高橋さんが中学生の頃、音楽雑誌で知ったミュージシャンだった。
