Hearing children of Deaf migrants: research participants wanted

By October 19, 2026No Comments2 min read 1 views

Are you a hearing Coda (child of Deaf adults) who has migrant parents?

Researchers from Macquarie University would like to talk to you about your language practices and experiences as a Coda with migrant parents as they relate to language use and sign language brokering.

We are particularly interested in your family’s language practices, the languages you use (spoken or signed), and any experiences of sign language brokering you may have.

To participate you must be over 18 years old and have at least one Deaf parent who was born in another country than where you currently live.

Participation involves attending an informal in-person or online interview, completing a digital diary, and optionally participating in a focus group discussion with other Codas who have migrant parents.

The research is conducted by PhD candidate Emily Pacheco. Emily holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language from Framingham State University and a Master of Research from Macquarie University. For her PhD, she is exploring the signed language brokering and heritage language maintenance practices among hearing Codas with migrant parents. As a Coda and professional interpreter herself, Emily is interested in the diverse language practices of Deaf-hearing families.

The supervisors are Dr Loy Lising and Distinguished Professor Ingrid Piller.

Participation in this research is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. You will receive a small financial token in recognition of your participation. This research has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at Macquarie University.

To register your interest and learn more about the research, contact Emily at this e-mail address.
